Why choosing the right contractor is critical with a kitchen renovation?

A
kitchen remodel project can sometimes seem overwhelming, especially if you try to do it yourself! I have done many successful kitchen renovations, and I am confident that I can help you with yours.

Once we meet on site, I will begin working with you to give you a complete set of specifications, drawings, and design parameters. That way, you will know exactly what you will be getting, down to even the smallest detail, before you sign your contract.

I have found that the method above takes the anxiety out of the project, and puts you, the homeowner, at ease throughout the project.
It also eliminates any surprises or misunderstandings- the entire project flows along and is enjoyable - as it should be.

The typical steps in a kitchen remodel project include:

  1. Initial consultation to discuss options, colors, use of space, etc.
  2. You choose the cabinet colors, cabinet options, counter tops, appliances, flooring, paint, tile, etc. and the items are ordered.
  3. Once all of the materials are on site, the project is started. This approach minimizes delays, and shortens the project.THIS IS HOW WE DO IT FAST.
  4. The project begins with the demolition of the old kitchen.
  5. If needed, modifications to the walls and ceilings in the space are done first. This step also includes wall and ceiling texturing if required.
  6. New wiring for switches, appliance upgrades, and lighting is done next.
  7. Painting is done next.
  8. Your beautiful cabinets are installed level, plumb, and with great attention to detail. THIS STEP IS OMITTED IF YOU KEEP YOUR OLD CABINETS.
  9. Your beautiful counter tops are next.
  10. Flooring and appliance installation is done next.
  11. Final wipe-down, clean-up, and final craftsmanship inspection.

Our Latest Kitchen Project Spring 2009

This project had the following specifications:

1.) Remove the wall and add an 18 foot support beam in the ceiling to open the kitchen to the living room.
2.) Rebuild a knee wall behind the sink base cabinets.
3.) Add a new rounded granite top to the existing cabinets with a new under mount sink and new faucet.
4.) Relocate wiring, switches, and outlets. Install six hanging pendant lights over the new open sink area and eat-in bar.

The existing cabinets and appliances would remain.

Below are two photos of the dramatic change once the partition wall was removed.

The Plan and Home Owner's Dream

The home owner consulted with me as to how they could update their kitchen and make the current closed feeling space feel more open. The old kitchen had a partition wall that separated it from the living room area. It was the home owner's dream to remove the wall, and also push the kitchen space out into the living room area. After careful consideration and thought, it was mutually decided that the floor to ceiling wall would be removed, and replaced with a smaller knee wall. With that new configuration, the kitchen space would be separated from the living room space, and would convey a feeling as if the two rooms were sharing a common space.

Other considerations in the kitchen redesign were also addressed. Since the kitchen was to become wider, an island was considered for the newly opened center space. Additionally, the pantry area was to be removed, and a combo oven/microwave would reside in that space. And lastly, the refrigerator would be relocated from one end of the wall to the other, to make room for the new cabinet pantry.

Unusual Constraints

One of the most unique challenges presented by this project was how to extend the kitchen ceiling into the living room space. The kitchen ceiling was only eight feet high, and the living room space was vaulted. Additionally, the homeowner did not want the ceiling extended out and all the way across the living room ceiling since there was a door opening that would make such a solution look odd. It was finally decided that the new ceiling would come out at a height of eight feet only over the new bar and knee wall area, and then jog back towards the kitchen and reveal the vaulted ceiling section as it had always been near the door opening. This solution faired very well, and solved the ceiling dilemma while adding architectural flare to both rooms.

The Transformation
The kitchen was completely gutted from top to bottom. The old tile was removed and the floor was leveled for the new brick-step tiles. The pantry was removed, and the entry door from the garage was moved to make clearance for the new pantry cabinet. All the lighting was redesigned. Recessed lights were added, and switching was updated so the owner could turn the lights on and off in several locations around the kitchen. The island was added, and the refrigerator was relocated. The knee wall was added, and the ceiling was extended above and into the living room.

Once the room space was redesigned and the new cabinets were added, Quartz counter-tops were added to really enhance the charm of the room. Lastly, a new range hood was installed over the cook-top. The range hood was the final piece that served as the focal point just at the two-room transition.

From Closed and Outdated, to open and Modern

It was amazing how much opening the wall up to the living room from the kitchen made the spaces flow and harmonize together. The new ceiling over the bar area gave the impression that the kitchen was pulling you in from the living room, but at the same time releasing you to step back into the living room. From the kitchen side, now the home owners could enjoy speaking with company in both rooms, or they could watch TV while they cooked. The new kitchen space was also wider, so tasks and traffic in the space did not feel as congested.

What the home owner had to say when the job was complete.
